Awesome Pampers Price @ Walgreens

Walgreens @ 17th & South has their big boxes (approximately 50+ diapers) of Pampers Prints diapers marked down to $14.99. Even better there were recently $2 manufacturers coupons in the Proctor & Gamble coupon inserts.
$12.99 is an amazing price.
They have boys & girls prints from Newborn to size 4; these are stashed on the top shelf in the diaper aisle.

Buy 1 Get 2 Free Ocean Spray Juices @ Hy Vee - 3 Days Only

Hy Vee is running a 3 day sale from March 1st thru 3rd, and one of their super deals is Buy One Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice at $2.98, get one Free.  This is a pretty excellent deal, but I had to make sure I was getting the best deal possible.

Go to www.oceanspray.com/events to print off another Buy One Get One Free Coupon, which means you'll get 2 bottles of juice free!  $1 each, you can't beat that!

Also, there are super sales on both grapes and strawberries...oh the kidlets are going to be so happy!  And best of all, Kellogg's cereals are all 50% off.
Don't be deceived though, stick to your bottom line, sometimes sales just aren't worth it.  Like the 10 yoplait for $6, this is not a good deal, $0.60 per yogurt cup, I won't pay more than $0.45 each.

Good luck deal hunting this week friends!

Skim Milk Steal!

Hy Vee @ Williamsburg has their store brand skim milk gallons marked down to $0.99!
Stock up & put them in your freezer!

Hy Vee Pepsi Deal - Only 2 more days!

Yesterday Hy Vee had a 1 page ad with a coupon for 2 Pepsi cubes for $10.  This is an in store coupon and can therefore be paired with a manufacturers coupon as well.
Also in this Sunday's paper there was a $2/2 Pepsi Cube manufacturers coupon.  SERENDIPITY!

That makes each can $0.16 each, what a deal!

Additionally, Hy Vee has their Hormel pork tenderloins on sale, and there was an coupon a few weeks ago for $1 off, so I'm buying 3 today...no harm in popping those bad boys in the deep freeze!

Target Deals 2/26

Patience is a virtue...usually one that I run short on.  But when it comes to buying clothes and shoes for the kids, I will stalk the clearance section for as long as it takes.  I buy 2 sizes ahead and usually my maximum price per item is $5.

I've been waiting to get Zoe a new pair of shoes for a while, the ones she has fit, but they are hand me downs & I know that's not particularly good for your feet.  FINALLY after months of waiting for them to be marked down, there they were in all their purple patent leather glory for only $4.98!

Also, we picked up "Where The Wild Things Are" on DVD for $4.75.  If you have not seen this movie, just go buy it, you won't regret it.  It is a story of love, loss, alienation, jealousy, loyalty and growth.  It is hands down one of the coolest movies you'll ever watch and will pull at your heartstrings!

I have not yet gone shopping for the weekly sales, but will keep ya'll posted!

Live Rich & Free Shout Out

Live Rich & Free is one of my favorite blogs about living a frugal life.  This gal really knows how to go the extra mile, although she subsequently splurges on vacations that boggle the mind.  She is funny, smart and always has a unique point of view.
Today reading her blog post, I couldn't agree more.  Sometimes being a tightwad takes all the fun out of life.  BUT, putting that extra money away to take care of things that truly will make your life better in the long run is all worth it.
I'm in the same boat, Josh and I haven't gone to dinner together since my holiday party, and that was free.  We haven't been to a movie in a year, and that was Cars 2 and I would really like some jeans that fit.  Alas, I'd rather be frugal than wasteful and this is what I get.  Check out her blog, and enjoy!

Last week Hy Vee had their Kelloggs cereals 3/$5
I had a $1/3 coupon so this deal made it all even sweeter!

And even better, today is grocery store ad day in our paper, so I'll be busy getting ready for the week's shopping stops.

Make A Budget

I am the one who manages all of the finances in our home. Even though Josh is what anyone would consider the "bread winner", I make a contribution to our income and handle all bills, savings etc...
What it really boils down to though is that I'm good at saving money.  I sock money away in our savings account, I coupon, I cut costs and try to cook reasonably priced meals and avoid eating out as much as possible.
Josh on the other hand does the exact opposite.  He spends money on fun things like going out with his friends and unnecessary toys for the kids and eating out.  Then all of a sudden he makes statements like: "Within the next 2 months we need to get a home security system/go to Topeka to visit Grandma/Get my sunroof fixed" etc...  Where does he think the money for this comes from?

So I sat down and wrote and printed for him to see; an overall montly budget that includes how much we put into savings, our average expenditures et al.  I overshot on my grocery budget because I explained, if I don't, he'll spend the money on something else.

I've also started printing a per pay period budget.  That way he can see what we have to work with every two weeks.
It's amazing how we just got paid Friday and he has spent almost $200 on basically nothing.  Gas is a necessity, but everything else there is nothing to show for it.
I on the other hand have spent just under $90 on groceries, including presents for my nieces birthday party.  Funny how different those numbers are isn't it?

Josh is a smart guy.  He was involved in DECA in high school and understands money and savings pretty well.  But for some reason the money he spends on a daily basis doesn't tally in his head and apply to what we have to work with at the given time.

I really hope that seeing it in black and white will make it much more clear to him when it's time to reign himself in.

Do you and your family make a budget?  What methods have you used to allocate savings?

I'm looking at the big picture here.  We have a lot going on this year including paying the deductible on our home owners insurance for a new roof and an upcoming trip to Denver.  Call me crazy, but I'd like to enjoy our first REAL vacation since our honeymoon and I refuse to come up short due to lack of planning.

Dimner x 2 on a budget

Tonight I made steak enchiladas and I only purchased 2 things at the store today to make them with. Everything else was either leftovers or already on the pantry!

Tortillia shells - bought on clearance for $1 @ Sunmart last week
Black bean from the pantry, I'd guess $0.70 or less
Canned corn from the pantry, I'd guess $0.40 or less
Leftover steak & mushrooms from dinner Wednesday
Shredded cheese from the freezer, I'd guess $1.25 or less
Enchilada sauce from the pantry, I'd guess $0.65 or less
New purchases:
Kraft cooking cream cheese $2.50
Spanish rice-a-roni $1

This took no time at all to cook up & I pit half onto another pan and froze it for another night. So 2 meals for 3 people for approximately $8 dedicated to these 2 meals...not too bad!

Hallmark Deals!

For Valentines Day I got lucky enough to have a coupon for Buy One Card Get One Free for Hallmark, so of course I took advantage of that.  Even though the cards were only $0.99, its still savings!

I stopped in to the South Pointe location and was just tickled with the items they had marked down to 75% off.  I got two very nice water bottles for Elliott and me for $2.50 each.  I needed a new one for the Y and they will be great for his school lunches in the fall.

Also, Elliott's favorite Christmas program is "Prep and Landing", he looked at all the cute decorations before Christmas, but I never comitted to buying anything.  But lucky him, I discovered a "Prep and Landing" snow globe for him on sale from $19.99 to $3!  He was so excited and that simply made my day.

So be sure to look around wherever you go, you never know what deal could be lurking around the corner!

Holiday Sales Rule of Thumb

Another holiday has come and gone and all the holiday goodies are on mark down starting today.  While I'd just like to wait to run out to Super Target, I REALLY want to get 2 Valentines themed picture frames...so I'll go out today.

But the rule of thumb to remember with post holiday sales: 3-3-2
The first three days items are on sale 50% off
The second three days items are on sale 75% off
The next two days items are on sale 90% off

I'll let you know if I score any goodies on my trip out to Target today or later this week!

Super Target Deals 2/11/12

Made a not so quick trip to Super Target on Friday afternoon.  I certainly scoped out lots of things I wanted but had the sense to put them back on the shelf.  I think I'll be heading back on 2/15 to pick up some Valentines stuff on clearance, and some awesome Beatles pilsner glasses marked down to $5.98.

My only regret this visit was the weight and toner set.  It was a great deal, and honestly the type of device I need at home.  If I could have opened the package I would have seen that the instructions all call for part of this band to be closed in a door during the work out.  So I'll be standing in the hallway the whole time.  Not really condusive to stretching and having full range of motion.  I'll just have to find some other resistance band exercises on line...Sigh.

But other than that, it was a pretty decent trip to teh store for things that we can certainly use this week!

What's In My In Box

What a pleasant suprise I got this morning when checking my email!  A message from Arm & Hammer stating that if you try their new "long lasting" kitty litter and submit your receipt you can get a full refund!

As a cat owner buying litter is one of the things I hate most.  It's expensive, heavy, stinks and scooping it is the pits.  But I'd rather have a cat poop in a box than a dog come in with muddy paws, so I guess it's six of one and half a dozen of the other.

But I digress...now I'll have to scour the ads these next few weeks for a good deal or coupon to pair this with and I'll be all set!

Sunmart Deals 2/9/12

Okay, I'm a total liar, I went back on my post from yesterday and went to Sunmart...Sigh.
If you live near a Sunmart you may have received the "Magnet Mailer" a few weeks ago.  It's got 4 items per week that are marked down significantly.  Since this is a store based coupon, you can pair it with any manufacturers coupon for even better savings.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not a huge fan of Sunmart, I think their prices are outrageous and usually their produce is gross.  But every once and a while they lure me in...Thursday was one of those days.

The only item on the Magnet Mailer I was interested in was a 12 pack of Charmin Basic Big Rolls on sale for $3.99 - now that's already a pretty good deal, since I try to keep my spending to $0.25 per single roll.

**On a side note, wouldn't it be nice if all toilet paper companies used the same measurement for roll size.  None of this single, double, super, mega crap.  I want to know if I'm buying the equivelant of 1, 2 or 3 rolls, simple as that.**

Anyway, lucky for me on Wednesday night I got a Proctor & Gamble coupon packet in the mail that included a $1 off any Charmin coupon!  So paired with this sale that was $2.99 for 12 Big Rolls or 24 Single Rolls which makes each roll only $0.13 each!

One of the good things about Sunmart is that they actually "Clearance" items.  Most of them are off brand, or seasonal decor, but it's always worth looking.  Yesterday I got a package of Chi Chis tortillias for $1 and a big bottle of vanilla for $1.

I'm breaking my "no shopping" code tonight again to stop at Target, they have some super deals on Alexia frozen potato products and Campbells Kettle Classics soups, I'll let you know how I fare.

Have a good & money saving weekend all!

Saving Money

So I know I've fallen off the map a little as far as my usual postings go and that is for 2 big reasons.

#1: I've been sick as a dog.  The only things I've bought in the last week is medicine & kleenex.  Thank god I'm feeling better or I'd freak out.

#2: I've just decided that I have enough.  Seriously, I have a small closet brimming with staples for me and my family.  While I won't walk away from a super steal, I'm going to take a small break from the extreme-ness of my shopping ways.

I have no intention of shopping at all the rest of the week, maybe if Sunday's ads are any good I'll make a list.  But for now, all I need are the essentials: fresh fruits, veggies, meat eggs, and milk.

Sorry, that's not entertaining or inspiring in any way, but some times you just have to draw the line.  12 boxes of cereal is ENOUGH.
